Meeting’s Theme & Topic:
Oceanography meets Meteorology!
Speaker: Dr. Robert Stewart: Texas A&M Department of Oceanography
Dr. Stewart has been on the Texas A&M University faculty since 1989 (TAMU bio). Prior to A&M, Dr. Stewart had a joint appointment between Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the Cal Tech/NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory where he was a project scientist for Topex/Poseidon. He is an expert on radio scatter from the sea surface, satellite altimetry, satellite oceanography, and on the use of HF radar. Dr. Stewart has been, and still is, an active member of the Topex/Poseidon Science Team, the Topex/Poseidon Extended Mission Science Team, the Jason Science Team, and the Ocean Surface Topography Science Team. Through these teams, he has become very familiar with the world's meteorological agencies’ large scale experiment to forecast ocean currents up to a month in advance, or the GODAE, Global Ocean Data Assimilation Experiment.
Lately, Dr. Stewart has been mainly involved in teaching at all levels.
He has written a book on physical oceanography:
He is also currently writing an oceanography book:
Dr. Stewart can be found on the internet at “Ask Dr. Bob”. This NASA-funded Ocean-World website allows anyone to shoot off oceanography questions to him. While he answers most in a timely manner, he sometimes has to deal with that lazy “slash” cheater element. Dr. Bob aids them, as well, by pointing them in the right direction, or toward the pertinent link. Dr. Bob puts it best by stating, “I find a lot of very curious students out there (on the Web) who really have an interest and are trying to find out something to arouse their curiosity.”
